If you go to the Volvo accessories page you can enter your model and year and you will be able to see all the different summer and winter wheel combinations that they offer. It also shows the tyre sizes.
I bought the 16" combination (Odens I think) last year and got a cracking deal from Rufe.
I have tried to include the link but without success on my tablet. Will edit this post with the link next time I'm at my desk.

Volvo says the 16" will not fit our model due to the size of the brakes (disks?). 17" or 18" for our car.

I was told by local Volvo that 16x7 would be fine for my D5 that runs in 18" rims. Got a good price for NAOS rims that look great and are now sitting here waiting for some 225/55 winters (Continental Winter Contacts in my case) to get into stock at local rubber dealer. Remember that you get 10% off if you are VOC member, I reckon you can get a set of 4 at just over 1K from then direct, I have gone for fancier tyres so my set will be a bit more.

Will be interesting to see how car behave with 16's compared to the 18's. Was over in Gothenburg last week and as you can imagine Volvo's are 5 a penny, nearly all ran on 16's, hardly saw any 18's on any cars. Great to see lots of old 740-940's, all immaculate. They under-seal em every so many years so body's stay clean for years n years.

Nankang, from Mytyres £72 each. Plus there was a 3% of with Quidco I think, but I did order a pair of tyres for my wife's car and I can't remember which tyres the discount applied.

Had a quick look at a MY10 brochure I have and that has a note stating "Not all wheels are suitable for all engine variants."

Looking at the maths, a 316mm brake disc is 12.4 inches, leaving a gap off 3.6 inches between disc and the outer edge of the wheel. That measurement is a diamater so we need to halve it to get a radius measurement. That leaves us with 1.8 inches to accomodate the width of the caliper and the thickness of the rim. Not a lot of room is there.

I am in a similar situation. I was looking at the ebay steel wheels and tyres (about £500 for 4 16" wheels and tyres for my V70) but then remembered a comment about insurance so I checked my policy. It says you can fit winter tyres but they have to be the same size and profile as the wheels they replace and that if the car has steel wheels, you cannot replace them with alloys (no mention of the other way round). However as my current wheels are 17" rims I am now looking at a cheap set of alloys with winter tyres of the same size and profile as my standard tyres. They start at just under £700 (£350 for the alloys)

I am just unsure as to which winter tyres to get. I think it's pointless spending £700 and getting little benefit if I could get much better winter performance by spending a bit extra on the tyres.

Don't spend a fortune on premium brand winter tyres. I made that mistake with the first set I bought. The second set and all others have been "budget brands" and can have not noticed a huge difference in wear or performance.

Winter tyres do behave differently to summer tyres, but as long as you don't drive at "the ragged edge" you'll be fine.

There is no better feeling than chugging past a "Chelsea Tractor" stuck on a hill driven by a Kn*b or female with way too much makeup on! (you know the type)

Which Gen3 V70s have the 316mm disks? I've looked at all the car part online websites and can't find a 316mm disk whatever V70 spec I enter in the search. Did they just randomly use different size front disks on different years?!

I have ordered a set of Nokian WR A3 winter tyres on Enzo W 17" alloys. It will be interesting to see how they compare when the weather gets colder on my forthcoming regular trips across the pennines to York
