‘09 XC90 replacement propshaft issues

Hi folks,
I’ve just bought an 09 xc90 D5 185bhp auto (130k miles) at auction and have found out that it’s had the propshaft removed. After some research I found that the right part no 30783345 which I have sourced.

To my dismay, the rear flange on the shaft is too wide and doesn’t Fit in the recess in the rear diff flange!!

Is this the right propshaft? and
Does anyone know if the rear coupling on the propshaft can be changed to suit the diff or vice versa? Part no’s?

Wow.... now there's a question we have not had before!

Whilst I can't help specifically, if I were you I would get some used ones - you should be able to measure the flange and check if it will fir beforehand.

The propshaft is not a part that causes many problems at all so should be easy and cheap to get a used one. If you're fussy - buying a used one and then replacing the joints will still I suspect be cheaper than the new part.

Thanks for the response. I have already bought a new propshaft but wanted someone to confirm if they knew I’df the one I had got was the right one and also if the rear flange on it could be changed out for one that will fit the AOC unit flange or whether I needed to change the AOC flange.

I have a 2009 XC90 SE Lux 185bhp
I replaced my prop shaft several years ago at 138k miles.
The replacement part number was / is 30783345 and fitted just fine.
The part no. sticker on the original propsahaft has the same part number.
o/d of the flange of the prop shaft is 86mm diameter both ends of the shaft.
I still have the old prop shaft; it turns out it wasn’t the shaft that was at fault.
An expensive mistake I might add - new one from Volvo circa £900 plus vat.
Old one available for sale if anyone requires it.

Hi Simon, thanks for the info. What was the other issue that you had?

I suspect there may be some more sinister elements at play given the car going in to an auction with no prop!

I can’t understand why the rear flange doesn’t fit on the back of mine - going to check what the flange diameters are.

Would you happen to know if the rear flange joint can be swapped out?

Not sure if this is helpful, but when my indi volvo specialist replace my transfer box, (I know this is to the front), the propshaft would not mate. He replaced the flange from the old transfer box and all OK.

Could it be that your rear unit was also faulty and replaced with a unit with a dissimilar flange? . This mismatch may be the reason the propshaft was never refitted.

I am not sure if similar year xc70 have same components but maybe the flanges are different? I do know that some suppliers of second hand units say they are for w wide range of volvo models. It could be that they have different flanges.

Your 'fix' may be to source a flange that matched from a used box.

Luckily my Indi had my old transfer box for parts

Are you able to ask the old owner if the rear box was ever changed?

If you mean replace the flange on the rear of the propsahft then I guess it can be replaced (but then you have your replacement prop shaft don’t you?).
But perhaps of more concern is why the mating flange of the rear diff / Haldex unit is incorrect.
Even if you can replace the flange (whether diff or prop) how will you know if it has the correct final drive ratio - if it’s not then you could end up causing some real damage - me thinks!
From experience Volvo stamp virtually everything with the part no., I think the final drive unit is marked with this - someone with Vida might be able to confirm the right part no. for your car.
According to Volvo my final drive / diff is part no. 36001719 (haven’t checked on the car though).

Hi Whizzer, thanks for the response

Been in to Volvo and they said the 30783345 prop is right one for the car (86mm front and back CV joints) assuming nothing has been swapped out. The fact it doesn't fit (car has 86mm front and 78mm rear) means either the one I have 2nd hand is dodgy (looks OK to me) (they would be quite happy to replace it for £1k + labour) or the haldex has been changed out either way we're looking at a pricey repair for a new haldex and/or prop.

There appear to be only 2 rear companion flanges used across the entire haldex 4 cars with the changeover from one to the other (31259350 to 31254919) at chassis 593215, mines is chassis 533945. I've no idea if there is a difference between the size of these on the gen 4 haldex units?? Cant find one one of either anywhere in UK for sale individually!!

After more digging (volvoem.com is great) there is another prop that appears to fit my car 31325356. [/B]Anyone know if prop 31325356 has a 78mm rear flange??

The saga continues........ Lets hope the frost stays away a bit longer!

PS 36001719 is also the same final drive for mine, but there are a number of haldex units that can be fitted on to it. I may well have ended up with a haldex off an S80 or something else with the same rear diff. I think there are at least 4 or 5 different gen 4 haldex part numbers.

PPS haldex on car is 30787700 (also known as original part no 36002518)
