Engine flushing ??
I was chatting to my Volvo specialist that reakons using an engine flush when doing an oil change stops the tappets being quite so noisey when cold as it removes all of the crud. Any thoughts about this ?? is it ok to do and if so which flush is best to use, wynn's or what ?? Thanks si |

RE: Engine flushing ??
If the purpose of the flush is to remove dirt and paricles from the engine then how the dickens can it quieten tappets. If he means that the oil gets to the tappets quicker after flush has been used then perhaps he has a case. However I would think that it is extremely unlikely that there would be any noticeable difference in tappet noise except, perhaps, that they may become a little noisier. Was he offering you the flush at a cheaper price?
All the best, Peter. |

RE: Engine flushing ??
Hi Peter, They were trying to sell me this new product, can't remember the name but it contains some sort of gas ?? they said they had tried it on their on 850's and that it worked a treat. They also said that Volvo recomment and engine flush at about 100K miles, but I haven't heard of this before ! I will most likely just do a normal oil change anyway :) Si |

RE: Engine flushing ??
I reckon they're trying to pull a fast one. I wouldn't flush an older or high mileage engine, cos you need a film of 'stuff' to help keep the oil seals and pistons tight. Once you remove the 'stuff' then you may run the risk of leaky seals, excessive piston blow-by etc etc.
The theory doesn't quite work though, because Volvos being what they are, and particularly with the new generations of synthetic lubricants, don't wear much. But if you've been using fully synthetic from once the engine had bedded in, then it acts like a flush anyway. Increased oil flow would quiten tappets, but that would imply that the oilways are blocked slightly. That shouldn't happen if you've been good and kept your oil clean. Andy |

RE: Engine flushing ??
Hi all,
I have a 94 850 running with fully synthetic more than a many a year. I too have very noisey tapets at startup and normally goes away after about 15 minutes. The cost at a dealer to have this done is about £1200 quid as i enquired one day to see if it were a real problem or not. I personally use Wynns flush every 4 or 5 oil changes just as an extra measure with no problems with any of my seals so far. mark.

RE: Engine flushing ??
Hi All,
My dad's a mechanic and has helped me look after all of my cars. He has always said that unless the car has had flushes with each engine change then mid and high milers shouldn't have a flush for the reasons stated above. Chat later Stu |

RE: Engine flushing ??
We are back to the old question of how often should you change oil and should you use a quality oil or not. Its also worth looking in your manual to see if you are using the correct grade of oil for the temperature range you are using the car in. Change the oil regularly and you dont need to get as much crud out every time!!! Use a quality oil and it doesnt build up so much varnish etc on the hot bits. Cheers Nigel
