Think I might follow in your footsteps rather than pay £750 odd for a new DIM.first step buy new fine tipped soldering iron and magnifying glass.

Removing DIM from S80
Hi Keith. I tried following your instructions and got as far as pulling the housing apart but couldn't get any further. Has the housing to be removed? If so, I can't see how to do it. Can you advise please? Cheers.

Removing DIM
Well I just followed the instructions in Haynes.
I don't know if all models have the same fixings. Mine is an '03 S80 D5 and the top half of the steering wheel housing is connected to the dim surround. I firstly disconnected the battery and waited for 10 min. I don't know why but many of the posts recommended this as a precaution! You hten take out two screws from the dim surround (they're behind little plastic covers that lever off in the top face and they go up towards the windscreen) and three screws from beneath the s/wheel housing. You then move the wheel fully out and down to get room and ease apart the upper and lower bits of the housing. The upper part and the dim surround are connected with a flexible bit and the two now lift out. I had to wiggle the dim surround quite a bit and pull it outwards to loosen it. Then there are four screws to remove holding the dim in place. Then when its out you'll see one multiplug to disconnect the dim completely. Mine has been perfect since my last post and I'd say I've covered 2k in that time. Good luck, Keith |

Mine is still working fine since I resoldered the chip. I now look at the clock instead of trying not to see it running endlessly forwards!!!!

Hi,
Don't use actone it can attack some of the components. Get some isopropol alcohol and an old toothbrush. Chemists are the cheapest for a 1/2 litre. It will remove flux and evaporate quickly from the board. Bob |

I used nail varnish remover, but only on the blue sealant around the chip. No sign of anything else dissolving.
I just ran the soldering iron over the pins until the solder melted (went shiny) then cleaned between the pins with the end of a needle to make sure that none were bridged. I didn't need a magnifying glass, all I did was take a picture on my camera at the end and zoom in to look for any bridged pins. Took about 30mins all in. Never soldered anything else in my life. Simple. |

After the DIM playing up on my 02 V70 D5 I read the all the posts re DIM that I could find and decided to have look inside the unit .It was displaying all the usual intermittent faults that were fast becoming permanent. I found some joints that were dull and dry and re-soldered them . It fixed one problem then another started . I am competent at soldering but was worried about heat damage to the I/C's on the board . I bit the bullit and took the unit to BBA-reman at Rochester in kent .They are Specialist Automotive Engineers. They have repaired all the faults and checked all circuits for any imminent failures. Cost was £172-50 with a two year warranty. They usually take 2-3 days but are very busy at the moment and took four days . They are situated near Rocheter Air Port and can be contacted at: http://www.bba-reman.com/catalogue/index.aspx
