Default Alarm not working

Hi can anyopne help me. My alarm does not seem to want to work. I lock my door but no flashing is sen to flash. On instruction, I opened the drivers window and then locked the car door. After a few seconds I reached in and opened from inside. No alarm went off. Is there a way of diagnosing this?
I would be grateful for any help.

Nope. All I have is a key. It is not a keyless central locking system.

i would suggest you check out the receiver to clarify this...it is under the steering column shown here with the bt style cable going into it....

if your unit is red a fob will not work....
is your car an estate.....
cheers

Hi Jod,

Yes.it is an estate. Are you saying that I can get a fob to set the alarm and lock the car? or just to set the alarm? Sorry, I haven't been very informative but it is my first Volvo after being a SAAB man most of the time.
The car is an 850 Glt estate 1994(T5 lookalike).

How is the Fox in Finchingfield these days ?

ah the fox, i can be found there weeknights proping up the bar and at weekends slouched in the corner...lol its still very dark and the pool table draws in the "kids" but the green looks very pretty with the lights up and the tree in the pond....

there are three types of alarm on the 850, two of which will accept fob useage and one which wont...basically you will have to find out which receiver you have by checking under the steering column removing the relay and comparing it to either of these

if it is red it is unlikely that a fob will work although i know bb54 is in the process of working out what additional bits would be required for a conversion...
the set up for the alarms is different on the estate to the saloon in that the immobiliser works off fuse number 16 i would check this first of all as it may have been removed or damaged at some time....
check the fuse and your receiver and post back
cheers

Hi Jod,
Well, I did what you said and checked the fuse. It looked okay to me but, just in case I put a new one in. Still no joy. I then took of the panel under the steering column and found that it is a red box(poo!)

Is there any other way of testing this alarm?

i would check all of the locks, boot first to ensure the immobilser connections on the microswitch are not damaged....
even tho the tailgate may lock the switch may not be informing the immobiliser that it is, therefore not allowing the immobiliser to arm....
cheers

Thanks Jod,

I have just had a thought(steady!) the petrol flap lock does not operate when I lock the car so I am wondering if that could be the problem.
