When I think about it that is right: the B200 and B230 replaced the B21 and B23 in October 1984 - although they were pretty similar so it was mostly a badge engineering exercise. Here is a good piece on the history of the red block motor: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volvo_Redblock_Engine

Anyway, the auto boxes would have been AW70 or 71 (much the same) from Feb 84. 4 speeder auto boxes - overdrive in the sense that 4th was higher than 1:1 - but a single box, not a separate overdrive unit.

Just to hi-jack my own thread !

I tried to identify which auto box my 1991, 240 gl ,2.0 L , has.

The I.D.
plate , is awol, any other ways of telling?

Wanting to do a fluid and filter change.

I'm pretty sure it will be an AW71 Andrew, looks like one of these:




... I know, it is difficult to compare on the motor car :-).

The AW70 and AW71 have the same filter and gasket anyway, and take the same ATF, so it doesn't really matter.

Thanks bud. I probably took too much notice of Brookhouse, who insist on ID numbers before dispatch.
It is definitely an AW box because the rectangle where the ID plate should be is on the casting.👍
