Default Courtesy Lights not working when doors unlocked

I have a problem with the courtesy lights on my 1995 850 estate. The front courtesy lights work when operated manually from the overhead switch & the rear ones work from their individual switches. The footwell lights come on when I open the front doors. But the courtesy lights do not come on when I open any of the doors. I have looked at the article by Christ the Ancient, but I think its about a later car, so the pictures of the lock do not match mine. I can see only one switch which does nothing if I operate it, also it looks nothing like the ones in his pictures. Has any body fixed this problem, or do I need to get new locks?

Hi,

Do the lights come on when you unlock the car with the fob? If not, check relay 205/206 under the dashboard, (courtesy light timer/central locking).

BR,

Rich.

Thanks Rich, the key fob stopped working years ago, I put new batteries in it, but it is kaput and manage without, although alarm is not set, so maybe I should get round to getting replacements. Anyway I will check the relay as I heard it might be a problem cheers.

Might be a silly question but are you sure the light switch is in the correct position?

Might be worth removing the light switch connector and bypassing the switch to eliminate it from being faulty

That had crossed my mind but I've not tried it yet. I have the advantage of a donor car where everything seems to work, so I can do swaps .

Success, at no extra expense. I swapped the switch from my donor car & courtesy lights now work on the drivers, the front passenger & the rear offside door, so three out of four ain't bad. Thanks for the suggestion 4x4

Always best start with the simple things first... Have you checked the bulb in the non working light?

All the lights work its just that the nearside rear door does not activate the lights. That's not a big issue, so I'll leave it alone for now.
