The trouble with hitting them is the bearing has a very exact fit (obviously) so hitting it on one side won't help much. I find gentle hand pulling works best, with a little wiggling. You can't actually see any wiggle, indeed bearings aren't supposed to wiggle at all, and is part of the MOT inspection. The wiggling is all by feel, essentially it must be pulled off straight.
You could perhaps make a puller by drilling into some 6mm steel three holes. The two end ones for the wheel prongs, held fast by wheel nuts, and the middle one with a bolt through to push on the spline with a nut on it's reverse side forcing the steel away. Hope I've explained that satisfactorilly.

Yeh you did. Again as I don't have the funds, it has to be a garage job. I don't have enough equipment to fashion one either. Shame really but hey ho. At least I got 90% of it done.
Shame the neighbour asked about the banging, if only it was due to summat else ;-)
