It is provoked by a tight turn then continues to vibrate for about half a mile even when going straight then disappears. Had a look under and all looks fine. Beginning to question if it is gearbox related and goes away once oil has given everything a coating? MOT is soon so I need to get to the bottom of it

thanks

Is this definitely a problem with the car? My gearstick also shakes and goes away after half a mile in this weather...

Given what you've just said its got to be in the drive train, but I'd discount the gearbox purely because the symptoms are activated by a tight turn.

I'd still plump for a CV joint or wheel bearing, or as I said before the centre bearing on the long drive shaft. Choice no1 though is CV joint, roller bearings have collapsed on one or more legs of the spider..

Many thanks I will look at changing driveshafts one at a time to see. Do you guys know off the top your heads how many splines a 98 t5 has on the driveshaft? I want to say 36 but I can't remember. Just to make sure I get the right one. Thanks again

I'm afraid I don't know the amount of teeth on a T5 shaft Gaztech I'm a TDi guy.

As for changing the driveshafts, I do hope we aren't sending you on a wild goose chase mate, its just that from what you've said it seems to point to a CV joint. If you think about it, they are the weak link in the drive train, the point at which the drive is transmitted to the road wheels at varying angles/torques/speeds.

I do wish you luck, and hope you get it sorted, and keep us posted as to your progress.

Dave..

Update. The noise disappears instantly when the clutch is depressed. Do you think driveshafts would need to be under engine load to highlight a failing one? I am actually going to be installing an lsd and new clutch very shortly so I'm going to be in the depths of it soon but with the mot looming I am looking to get this sorted first.

As with all things mechanical, they don't always perform to a precise set of symptoms for easy diagnosis of faults. To my way of thinking a failing driveshaft will be, or should be more noticeable under load/torque..

Having said that of course, the opposite can apply under certain conditions. Just as a throwaway.. maybe the noise and turning are a coincidence and you have a failing clutch, and or, bearing..
