Default Engine Service Amber light

Hi all,

The wife came back from shopping today and she said that warning symbol on the dash was coming on every 4 to 5 secs. So i have been out to look at the message display and it did display regular service. So i reset that using the known procedure, but now the message display says Engine Service required and whilst the engine is ticking over the warning triangle symbol on the dash flickers amber, i can't seem to clear it. Any help would be appreciated.

Regards

Alan & Nicola.

The warning triangle just tells you that there is a fault code. You need to read that code (DTC) to find out what is wrong.
Try to find a garage or friend that has VIDA to get the best information.

Hi Gmonag,

I have plugged my Autel into the car, and there were no codes to clear. So i am a little stumped on this one now.

You may have a faulty instrument cluster. Not uncommon.

These guys can repair it for a very reasonable price:

For the very nominal price he charges, it is worth sending to him for a checkover. It would eliminate the cluster as an issue if he says no faults found.

Taken from forums, I've put down a list with possible causes for this message. Again, it's a compilation from several forum topics.

Early cars (01-02) had problematic throttle body units (Magneti Marelli). On manual cars, test the clutch pedal position sensor. On all cars, test the VVT solenoid(s), inspect all turbo pipes (for turbo engines), check the brake pedal position sensor (at the booster), the PCV system (the ‘glove’ test), you may also see a accelerator pedal sensor code but it may not be relevant. One owner reported the message disappeared after he replaced the oil filler cap on top of the engine – try first replacing its seal, I’ve used a seal from the local hardware that fitted. May also remove the ECM modules and look for corrosion at their connectors (special tool needed to release the modules). On D5 diesel engines (Europe, Australia), check turbo hoses, DPF, fuel filter.

All this is on a blog I'm building https://volvos60xc70xc90buyersguide.home.blog
