Wet Flaps
We're had a 2011 for the last nine months and the fuel consumption compared to our previous 56 plate is dreadful.
I've had a quick check of the swirl flap linkage and that looks good, but there does appear to some wet oil at the engine side of the linkage. I'll try adding a photo. Is this normal? Can anybody tell me how to cycle the flaps in vida as well? |

A 2011 car has 15 more BHP and 20 NM extra torque than a 2006 car, an extra turbo, is over a second quicker to 60, is 9mph faster, and is genuinely Euro 5 compliant, so it isn't a terriblly relevant comparison.
And no, oil should be inside the engine. Whether it's anything be be concerned about depends on the cause. Last edited by Dastardly Diesel; Mar 25th, 2020 at 17:37. |

Most leak around the swirl flap area - there are numerous posts on this forum about this; mine had a leak when I bought it with 72k on the clock; now has 120k and I just clean the area every time I service it- it is more a weep than a leak. I am planning to replace the swirl flaps soon as they will be coked up but car is running sweet so no rush.

Later cars with the 205 and 215 BHP engine were twin turbo instead of single turbo. However I thought that the XC90 was different in the fact it only went to 200 BHP and kept the single turbo. I could be wrong of course.

With regards to swirl flaps - I would suggest it is okay for them to "sweat" but not to the point where oil is dripping.

Agreed - as you say Tannaton if just 'sweating' then no big deal; if you are getting other problems such as detached swirl arm then I would be replacing but right now everything on mine is fine so I just wipe her 'brow' every so often!
