Default Leak from tank.

Hi folks. Filled up the xc90 today. First time I have brimmed it since getting it 5 weeks ago. As I parked on the drive noticed a fast drip from the passenger side tank area. Underneath all the suspension is dropping in fuel where I have been driving. So dropped it off at my indy Volvo garage who will have a look tomorrow. Any thoughts? Thanks Jed (it's a 61 plate r design d5)

Very unusual on these cars, maybe the tank it's punctured ? If it leaks near the fuel door, maybe the filling neck has come loose ?

It's leaking from the passenger side, away from the filling neck. It is dropping from above the tank. I am wondering if it's pressurized somehow an escaping from a pipe.

On petrol engines, there was a recall where a plastic pipe going inside the fuel tank to the fuel pump, would crack just above the tank access cover: the car would smell gasoline. Diesel is different but maybe worth a look - there could be one or two access holes inside the cabin somewhere perhaps under the rear seats - I'm not familiar with their location on the XC90

Thanks that's helpful. It's being looked at today and the guy said he has to gain access from the cabin by removing the seats so will update . Thanks jed

It appears to be a seal. Hard to get too due to removal of seats and cabin floor. Volvo specialist is also fitting new wishbones and balljoints although I am supplying these as I was going to fit them myself. Got a 02 s80 loaner with 250k on clock! Total bill £300

Default 2005 - XC70 - Fuel tank leak passenger side when full.

Hi. My 2005 XC70 D5 has just developed the same problem. Parked it on our flat level drive and had diesel dripping from the tank just under the rear passenger door. The car has done about 150 miles on a full tank. Had a look underneath, best I could. It appears it’s coming from above the tank, but can’t be sure. The rear underneath of the car on that side is wet with diesel, but NOT on the tyre or inside of the wheel/brakes. I moved the car onto out gravel so it might soak up any more drips. Since moving the car, the drip seems to have stopped and the fuel gauge is reading just above 1/2 a tank remaining with the readout saying the range left is 440 miles. I am thinking that it only leaks when the tank is above a certain level or full? Is this similar to your problem and have you found the fault? I have my friendly local mechanic going to have a look at it on Tuesday 24th March. Any info appreciated. Thanks.

Could be the filler tube or the pump/sender unit gasket on top of the tank (under the rear seat)

Thanks Greg. Just taken it for a spin towards Norwich on various roads for about 15 miles. Parked up on my level drive, not leak I gotta now. Still showing over 1/2 tank on the fuel gauge. Tempted to put just a gallon in the tank and see if it leaks again. Can’t see any wetness or leaks on the fuel filler side.
