Ray Chapman, York, have no knowledge at all of this fault. I have gone to an independent auto box specialist in Barnsley who have been excellent.

There were detailed volvo service bulletins issued about 4 years ago on how to finally fix this fault , it has been ongoing since about 2012 when the bumping into D first happened , volvo worked on it for a while and wrote software for the gearbox to self adapt which worked in a lot of cases , They ran courses for their technicians in about 2016 on how to take the front oil pump out from behind the torque converter , then pull out C1 clutch to expose the piston ring type seals rings on the main shaft which had to be replaced with modified ones .

I would suggest you find a decent dealer ..

what did the specialist do by the way??

They did the adaptations twice. The first time it almost cured the problem. The second time the problem started to come back after five weeks.

Beyond that they are not 100% confident that changing the valve seals will cure the problem because in their experience there is a possibility of other damage in the gearbox. At 45,000 miles the repair may well cure the problem but if it doesn’t, then a new gearbox is required.

I trust the independent who are experienced with these gearboxes. I had decided to live with the problem, however, further to your confident comments I will take this up with another main dealer or two.

Well these days there is only one specialist in this kind of thing and that is volvo and their dealers , no one else would be aware of the full story , volvo developed these new modified piston ring type seals 5 or so years ago now . They have worked in the cases i have come across .
The fundamental cause of the bumping into gear is oil pressure leaking away through a set of 3 or 4 internal metal main shaft ring seals , and the adaptive process just increases the oil pressure to try and compensate for it, which it did in the early stages of this problem .
The most expense is getting the gearbox out and in .( about 6 hours labour, or 8 for the AWD ) the actual repair is not too bad .
