Default S70 TDi cutting out when low on diesel

Hi folks,

Need to ask on behalf of a friend. Their S70 diesel has started cutting out eventhough the tank gauge is reading over a third full. Is this something simple as a fuel filter or is it a common sender issue?

Any advice gratefully appreciated...

I dont know what type of fuel tank is in the S70 but on my V70 D5 with a saddle type fuel tank was doing exactly the same thing even after replacing the in tank electric fuel pump , the fault turned out to be the 'syphon' pipe inside the fuel tank was broken off at the union with the fuel pump plastic pot , there are also members on the forum who have had the syphon pipe blocked or kinked having the same effect as the electric fuel pump cannot get diesel from the other side of the tank so you are effectively only able to use one side of the tank so even though you are nowhere near showing empty on the fuel gauge ( in my case over half full ) the engine is still not getting fuel . The repair I did myself ( there is a photo somewhere on here ) was to use a piece of copper brake pipe stuffed into the union and then half a tube of araldite around the whole thing as I am told it can withstand diesel ( which I am doubtful about but we shall see ) .

Thanks for the info Bernard. I'll look into that with the owners.

I've heard similar stories about the Audi A8 TDI and BMW 525tds and the person who told me carried out similar work to what you describe.

Cheers...
