It starts good as gold every morning but runs like a bag of ****e and stalls until the temperature gauge reads a normal temp, then it runs like the proverbial sewing machine.
Has anybody got any suggestions please (sensible).

It's a 2000 X reg V40 1.8 GDI with over 220,000 miles on the clock.

Lots of possible reasons, but I would put the use of non gen Volvo plugs or a dirty intake or throttle body top of the list.
If the plugs are good and the intake system not fouled up, then it would be a good idea to get the codes read, as they might list one of the sensors.

Did this problem start suddenly, or has it been a gradual onset ??

GDi like a bit of a thrash but as skyship said plugs and throttle body. I use NGK iridium plugs on mine, tried Volvo but not as sweet an NGK.
Drive it like you stole it for a few days, that often helps.

Although i dont have a gdi i can also vouch for the iridium NGKs, i had gen volvo the last 2 times and theres a marked difference in running with the NGKs.

Well, she still stalls and messes around when cold but I can handle that. She's at 230,000 now and still going strong. Oil and filter change every 6000 or so, new rear shocks, springs, discs, pads and calipers in the last 6 months.
MIGHT be looking at passing her on soon as just bought a 2001 1.9d v40. I just have to sort out the gutless performance of this oil burner.

I would get dirty and take the throttle body off and clean it up.

Hi

Sounds like the throttle body needs replacing. The magnet inside usually cracks. It's a Renault type one

I had a very similar issue on my 2001 v40 1.8. Couldn't find the cause, until I got the air-con fixed, then it started working just fine. Don't know if this will help, but maybe worth checking your air-con pump?
