I had the same issue with my 854 Turbo back then. Too large gap in the compressor clutch meant that when it was cool, it worked, but when getting warm (gap increases), the solenoid couldn't close the gap.

Re-shim the clutch and it worked for the rest of the car's lifetime.

I've not yet got it fixed. I don't drive often in town(s) and on the motorways, whatever the temp, the a/c always kicks in after a while as the clutch cools down.

I guess I'm just being lazy. The only time its really annoying is when its warm and raining and the windows start to steam up...

I had the same issue with my other car a 2006 Honda Civic, took the clutch off the front of the compressor (You can usually do this with the compressor in situ if you brace it somehow) took the shim out, replaced clutch, checked with the feeler gauge to make sure it was still in spec and I've had nice cool air ever since!
