Default 850 Cam Cover Gasket

Cam Cover Gasket

Anyone know of a cheaper alternative to Volvo's £30+ per tube?

No basically . it is more than a sealer it is a bonding agent which helps bond the cover to the head helping the stiffness . Hylomar is excellent in the right application but this is not it . you have an advanced engine don't skimp and bodge .. It is a loctite product but not sure which one ...

Thanks for that info.

So is it adding stiffness to the head?
Does it make it hard to remove the cam cover from the head?

The volvo sealant is an anaerobic sealant. Meaning it only dries in the absense of air. Due to the oil passageways in the cam cover, it is nearly impossible to apply sealant without some of it squeezing into those passageways. A normal sealant would then set and starve the top end of oil, an anaerobic sealant will remain liquid and be washed away with the oil.

Loctite do make a product suitable, i forget its number but tbh, it's not significantly cheaper and therefore i purchased the right stuff from volvo.

Thank you Dave.

I hope there is enough for more than one application in the tube volvo supply otherwise removing and refitting the cam cover, which in most cases costs nothing, will be £33 a time.

I suppose when I see it, it will be obvious just how much I need to apply?

It has a use by date on the tube and it does go off , How often do you remove the cover? Once every 25 years should be enough :-)

How much do you need to supply?? well the minimum possible just smear it on with your finger and no blobs at all .

That's true, I have not taken it off since owning the car. I did not realise the can cover was also the top half of the cam bearing journals.

I had since seen a couple of videos on YT where they apply it with a small roller. I'll probably use finger as you suggest.
