Default Cam Belt Change

Just finished replacing the cam belt on a 2000 model XC70 and wanted to confirm to Forum Members that it is possible to do without removing the crankshaft pulley nut! Spent a number of hours attempting to remove nut with ever longer socket extensions and home made crank locking tools before checking on this Forum for tips. Came across previous post suggesting new belt could be manipulated around pulley if small cover behind pulley was removed. Hey presto! Hardest part of job was then re-installing auxiliary (Serpentine) belt.

The same way I did mine Several thousand miles later it's all fine but no doubt someone who has read the book (but possibly never done it themself) will be along to tell you you've done it wrong and will also need a computer to tell you that the car runs OK

If you have the D5, you HAVE to remove the pulley.

Thumbs up

Agree with you s60d5-185, I did mine (163) without taking the pulley off. The oil pressure relief valve housing does get in the way and so I cut my old belt which had it removed in seconds. The new belt slid in as its more flexible and has a silicone coating that hasn't dried out!

I'm closing on 210K miles, so have already done over 30K since I changed it.
