Finally, got around to putting the XC60 into the Dealership on Monday, to have a replacement, Display Module fitted.
Fitting? No problem. Getting it to work? A different story. The replacement Display Module, would only work for about a minute, then shut its self down. Several software patches applied and numerous contact, made by the Dealership, to Volvo Tech Services. Finally, this afternoon, I have been told, that all is now well and I pick the car up tomorrow. Things are now getting too complicated. The days of DIY, seem to be over. Why, should an identical, replacement component, be so difficult, to be made to work? If out of warranty, I would have probably, tried to do this replacement myself and as a result, would be up to my neck, in the smelly stuff. I just wonder, what the total warranty bill, will be? There was several hours of tests, requested by Volvo UK, before a replacement unit was sancioned + all the work involved, since Monday. I am going to try to find out, but do not expect a result. tem. Dont think theres owt can be called a "simple" job on modern cars now though. Slightest change requires reprogramming etc just to get everything to communicate after a bit gets changed. Even a service requires the electronics just to put out the service reminder light!!

As a point of interest. With the XC60, being so new, there is not a stock of various, spare parts. The replacement Display Module had to be obtained from the Assemby Factory. Keeping my fingers crossed, that we get a spell of cold weather, soon. As the original unit did not like temperatures, below +4/5C. tem. Last edited by tem; Mar 18th, 2009 at 20:48. Reason: text |

Remember once driving home from Stirling with a bit of string out the window tied to the carb on a mark II Escort. Pull to go faster. Bloody nightmare if you misjudged a roundabout speed!!!!! Ah the days of Weber carbs!!!

Off duty AA Patrolman, on MC, supplied/fitted string and this got me home to Thurso. Those, were the days, when one could do something, without the need of software updates. Smart ar--ed son, in the back, says, "What happens if the string breaks, dad?", wife responds, before I can reply, "Tie a knot in it". tem. |

Get a Defender. Throttle cable broke. Son-in-law looked under the front seat found one left by a previous owner and fitted it and we were back under way in less than 20 min. Guess that's why the army still use them.
It's probably like adding a new component to your computer. Roy

The problem with the new software, was due to security codes. These codes allowed the software to be downloaded, but not accepted. Security codes removed, software downloaded and security code re-installed. Problem sovled. tem. |
