My understanding is that for type approval, you'd need to downplate the vehicle GVW accordingly.

The type approval legislation states "[goods] Vehicles shall show a goods-carrying capacity equal or higher than the person-carrying capacity expressed in kg."

Therefore to make it IVA-able in passenger vehicle category, you'd need to make the GVW of the pickup no more than 299kg more than it's unladen weight (2x75kg people + 149kg of goods).

My idea of a simple plate stating that in the buck should be enough then?

I assumed that was a typo of 'back'. Assume you mean the bodyshell?

It'd need a new VIN plate.

As far as i've always known it, the area where the load goes in a pick up is referred to as the buck, even if that means part of the bodyshell.

Body mods on that scale mean it loses the identity in the eyes of the DVLA, and would need an IVA and a new registration. There's no IVA scheme for light commercial vehicles, which makes it tricky to get it on the road legally!

Fine if you're planning on just enjoying it for a short time, but be prepared to lose the ability to use it if the DVLA catch up with you

Looking forward to seeing what you do
I actually really appreciate all view points/ideas, so thanks for sharing. I'll definitely take a look at this and see if the pickup route out ways the potential headache of retesting etc..

300 BHP is not too hard to do without going to major on mods, 400 is really a bit past what LH2.4 can support.

The grippers diffs are very good, I have sold a lot to guys for drifting and the work very well. The quaife diffs are also good but not quite as good for all out motorsport
What would you recommend for an aftermarket system as it's something I'm interested to learn about.

There are a lot to choose from but Microsquirt/Megasquirt is very well supported and lots of info (in the US mostly)

For first time you will probably need help with mapping so worth speaking to local companies and see what systems they use as if you need to have issues resolved they will be able help with a system they know

hence the SAFAs call a ute a "bucky".

Over here, its refered to as the "tray" or "deck".

Personally, I don't get the "ute as a performance vehicle" thing - it a silk purse from a sow's ears for me. But each to their own.

I believe that started in the USA Ash - if memory serves correctly, pick ups (utes) were exempt from the emissions kit hung on most passenger cars that depowered them horrifically. That means the Americans found ways of boosting the power in their pick ups and held contests to find the quickest. Sadly this has resulted in this trend :

Should've stuck to petrol V8s!
