Default Motorway driving/Cleaning DPF

Hi all,

I’m just wondering what the best procedure is to help clean the DPF on the motorway. How long of a drive does a Diesel need or how much time would I need to drive to help do this? Do you need to drop a gear when at cruise speed, or will cruising along at 70mph without dropping gears suffice?

I don’t do many motorway miles, so I think a bit of a motorway spin say once a month would help?

I have an automatic 2007 facelift S80 2.4D if that makes any difference or helps with the answer.

Thanks

I’ve been led to believe that 15-20 minutes at 2500+ revs now and again is a good habit to get into. Worked OK when the DPF-full light came on the dash on Mrs B's 1.6 diesel Skoda.

Example from VOLVO manual:

Worth adding that in the worst case you still have around 500-600 miles before DPF filter will start nagging you about it.

Thank you for the replies. I notice the key thing is to get the car to operating temperature. That’s hard to tell when there’s no temperature gauge! I presume driving for 20 mins or so at motorway speed will warm the engine fairly quickly.

How often would you recommend doing this for a car that primarily does hardly any motorway driving?

you dont need a motorway 50 mph is enough as long as you keep it up for a while ..

There’s very few roads that will allow me to do a continuous 50mph run... There’s traffic lights everywhere! The motorway is the best option to get the continual run I need.

Ideally yes but a long steady run at 50 - 60 is ideal . Having said that It will do it at many other circumstances too . even if you never go on a motorway . It really is not a problem generally .

Really? What other circumstances does the system trigger a regen, without motorway driving?

So 50mph or so on a long steady run is okay & there’s no need to drop a gear?
