Default Steering Rack Replacement XC70

Hi.

Had my XC70 D5 Geartronic 2003 Mot'd on wednesday - shock failed on the 'too much play in the steering' scenario.

Took XC to Volvo and had to have the whole steering rack replaced at a not insignificant cost of £1357.

The cars only done 55k!!!

Anybody else had this problem???

Any symptoms of the problem ?

I thought slightly sloppy steering and a tendency to not auto straighten from full lock were normal features of the XC70.

The only symptom was slight wear on the inner edge of the offside tyre and the MOT guy saying 'theres too much play and I can't adjust it'.

The actuall day to day driving was unaffected and appeared comletely normal.

No doubt another example of the Ford cost down. Volvo-Volvo 850 Tdi 378,000 miles even has original track rod ends, let alone the rack.

I have to say these cars a living off the name.

With my Polo the OEM rack was £600. The garage I took my car to found another for £270, so it might be worth going to an independent and seeing what they say.

Just to make you feel a little sick in the stomach and warn everybody else, the excessive lay in the steering rack is in the ball joints inthe tie rod arms these arms unscrew from the rack its self.I repair these at around about £15 an arm.sometimes the play can be found in the rack its self that just needs the slipper pad tighting up which can be done with a allan key.So how does that make you feel? garges will rip you off if they can (there is some that wont but not many) I hope this helps any one else.

yes i'd agree with cobra ,
Its not uncommon for the inner ball joints to have slight play ( they should have no play at all) but hardly an MOT fail issue as it's not immediatly dangerous , it should have been an "advisory" You should tackle them on this and get them to show you EXACTLY where the play is ...
