A good spares shop will have all the data to cross reference so will know the part you need.

There is only one spares shop in the town and they are not to clever about cross referencing (been caught before), suppose I could take the pulley off and take measurements etc and reinstate, looks the only way . Should have bought a SEAT !!!

It can but it can also disable the engine. I had a noisy rattly compressor which I ignored too long. It finally failed whilst driving but the car didn't stop then, it just wouldn't restart after I'd stopped. The compressor itself had seized internally and the load was then too great for the starter motor to turn the engine over until the serpentine belt was removed, but then you don't have the alternator nor power steering.

Pull the connector on the compressor ASAP is my advice until you can get it replaced.
