I have this problem as well with my S70.

Got my car last year (with 64k on the clock, one owner and full VSH) at the time I had the cam belt and other ancillaries done as well.

And when I had the service done last Nov (from the dealer) I remarked about the smoke and the mechanic said the timing was out a bit (he did it at the time) but it still smokes on hard acceleration?

Shall I just forget about it or does it require further investigation?

The car was well maintained by the previous owner never missing its service intervals etc. And was sold and serviced by the same dealer. So good history and its not given me any problems and i've done 13k in it in less than a year.

On another note is the glow light temp sensitive? As it never came on in summer? Sorry if that sounds like a stupid q!

I'd recommend having it checked/adjusted by a diesel engine specialist who has the Bosch diagnostic equipment. Even slight timing inaccuracies make a big difference to smoke, hot and cold starting, and general performance with these engines. Some smoke on hard acceleration is normal, particularly if you don't drive the car hard most of the time, but it should disappear if you floor it a few times in quick succession.

Yes, it only operates below 5 deg C.

My problem turned out to be timing. Not for the faint hearted though as this required adjusting the cambelt pulley on the camshaft and checking on a computer!!!! Still smokes a bit but starts better
