...and I should have said, don’t do this without pads in the caliper and caliper on the car - you don’t want to wind the piston straight out of the caliper!

Mmm. Well that’s avoidable if you perform the rewind before dismantling, but with respect, I’d rather use the right tool for the job
That’s what the professionals would use |

Actually my local garage now uses a PP3 battery, as described by TeamG... they failed my car on its last MoT for having rear pads with less than the minimum pad thickness. The guy then explained that they lacked the necessary equipment to release the EPB and that I'd have to get this work done elsewhere before he could retest. Using advice from the forum I knocked up my own 'release tool' using a lolly stick, a PP3 and a couple of M3 screws (to prod into the motor connector) all hot-melt glued together. Had no problem at all doing the job, got the retest and the MoT guy/garage boss was very keen to borrow this homemade tool and when I called in to collect it he showed me the one he'd made as a copy of mine.

This is the PP3 connector that I rigged up.

There’s nothing more professional than using colour coded heat shrink in the way TeamG has.

The difference in gauge between the PP3 holder wires and the croc clip wires does still trouble my OCD though!

Cannot remember Volvo's quote at the MOT & Service back in March. But pretty sure it was around the £800 mark.

Sanity check
I am sitting in the dealership while they do the service on my 67 XC60.
They said £270 for just rear pads, that seems silly so I said no, is this normal? |
