Then on icey mornings like this when I go outside and watch all my neighbours chiselling away at their iced up screens and I jump into a de-iced pre-conditioned car - all seems well with the world! Having had this feature on my previous two Range Rovers I knew I couldn't do without and I was right! Proper smug mode!
I'm in the same position, i never ordered the winter pack, but Covid was starting to affect the US areas that the S60 was built, and delays were on the horizon for S60's, so I was told i could accept a car that was already on the ship, identical, no speed limiter but it had the winter pack (its a T8 without the heated windscreen as i still wanted the HUD) but the heated aquablades, steering wheel etc work a treat!

Makes me much more comfortable in the mornings/evenings knowing the cars piping hot when i step into it.

Preconditioning with an auxiliary heater was available as a £1,500 option across the XC90 range for a while. I specified it on my car along with the Winter Pack.

It is more efficient and produces less pollution than starting the engine as long as (according to Volvo) you run the aux heater for a shorter time than the journey you will make.

There's also a setting for it to start automatically to boost the heating if you start the car without having precondtioned first.

I'd find it hard to go back to a car without preconditioning.

Ive not used remote start in mine yet…..

What happens with wipers? I mean, if I remote start to warm the car and the wipers are frozen to the screen, is there a risk they will try to wipe and cause damage?

My last car was a T5 v60 cross country with the winter pack (inc heated screen) added.

I think that was fine for freezing weather. 5 minutes before getting to the car and everything front and back would be clear. Heated seats and steering wheel ready to go.

The current car has an aux heater. Which is nice, but tbh I think the winter pack with heated screen is plenty sufficient. That and the windscreen will defrost faster with the screen over the aux.

In fact I plan to make the most of this shortly as I’m currently overseas in a t shirt and understand the U.K. airport will be minus 5 on arrival! 🥶

It starts the engine not the car. So it doesn’t unlock, doesn’t start wipers, doesn’t turn on the dash, doesn’t turn on lights etc. It’s just the engine and heating (plus heated seats, heated steering wheels and any heated windows) or cooling (aircon) depending on the outside temperature.

Winter pack is heated front screen and mirrors isn't it?

I don't activate the pre-heating of the steering wheel as I have a steering wheel lock fitted and suspect any pressure points will cause premature failure.

With my last few cars having heated screens. Ford and Range Rover and my last v90. I was very sceptical about the xc90 not having a heated screen. As I have hud. However. This morning. Start the car via app and by the time I had brushed my teeth and got outside it was Nicely toasty and defrosted. A heated screen is very good and is probably more useful than a hud. But not the be all and end all. It’s a shame you can’t have both tbh.

Steve.

In the current climate, pre-heat is a godsend.
