How does the TMPS work?
This cold snap as once again made me thing about all season tyres. I have a summer/winter set on my wifes BMW and frankly it’s a pain to store them and switch them. I previously had a Range Rover which had a snow terrain mode and handled all I needed it to in previous years on the standard summer tyres.
I might be doing my T8 a disservice but on the standard rubber it doesn’t generally feel as sure footed as my RR. It’s not a big problem for me, I do few miles but if I need to go somewhere I would like to have a little more confidence in poorer weather conditions. Not wanting to pay some silly premium for the 275 width, there is a plethora of choices for all season tyres in 285 width and otherwise same fitment which I’m tempted to go for. So should I decide to change my tyres for all seasons, are there sensors on the wheel/valve that I need to be mindful of, or is the sensing done by measuring revolutions of the wheel, as I seem to recall reading (perhaps on this forum)? Many thanks |

It helps if you add what model and year your T8 is but only very early cars had TPMS sensors in the wheels, from 2016 MY 2017 (in my XC90) there are no Sensors in the wheels and the TPMS detects a difference in tyre pressure (or rather tyre circumference) working off the anti lock brake system rings, if a tyre loses or indeed gains more than a few psi pressure from the set calibrated pressure the rolling distance is less or more and you get a warning. You calibrate the system yourself in settings when you alter the tyre pressure or change wheels etc.

Just put a set of Michelin Cross Climate 2s on our T8, 5 years of driving 2x T8s and agree they’re not confidence inspiring in the snow. This is my first set of all seasons, ran a spare set of winters on previous Touaregs. TPMS reset fine and the tyres, so far, are great in the current weather conditions

Pre 2017 you need sensor valves on the second set - I bought a volvo set for 190 quid about 4 years ago. They are plug and play, no coding required.
Post 2017 you don't need anything.
