The pull in coil in your starter is probably faulty, or the bendix could be slightly stuck. Have you tried a light tap with a hammer or such?

Move the car in gear to turn the flywheel in case you have a tooth missing on the ring gear or a sticking bendex gear.

Hi, I have the same problem after replacing starter motor in my V40 1997. Starter turns and engages when connected directly to battery, but nothing happens when I turn the key(unless I short it with a screwdriver, then it only turns).
When key is turned Voltage shows up on the small cable that comes to the alternator. My last bet is weak battery or ignition coil? Bump starting works... Please help guys |

Battery voltage should be 12.6 ish at rest. If it drops below 10 during cranking, that's likely your problem.

Battery is new. Currently charging but it is around 12.6V.
Would it be the engine earth connection? Any chance you know the location? |

There are lots of earths but trace the one from the starter motor first as a priority.

That's where I got confused in the first place.
I thought it is earthed directly to the engine by the bracket itself. There are no connection to ground on the motor itself. Also it just came to me that there was a small aluminium like tube through which one of the mounting bolts goes through, which I did not put back... Reply to this one quickly as well please. Need to be at work tomorrow morning. Unfortunately. |

I have an S60 so am unsure how your starter is earthed if it has no cable. I would restore the aluminium tube as I'm sure it must do something even if it's making sure the starter doesn't rattle around. If you think it's grounded to the block, then maybe voltage test the block during cranking. Anything over 0.5v would indicate a poor earth.
