You remove the caliper pins (which need removing anyway for cleaning) and pull the caliper off the carrier to replace the pads.

Out of interest, what are you using the 18mm socket for?
there is two 18mm bolts which hold it all on, i find it easier to split the caliper to change the pads, what reason do they give not to split it?

this braking system is really easy to do your self, you will need a 55mm short tox, a g-clamp and a 18mm socket.
Those tools to do what wise old monkey?
I had the caliper off yesterday to apply copper grease, (which incidentally the garage informed me not to use anymore)
removed using 7mm allen key.
Are the xc90 brakes okay on the v70?

xc90 brakes as far as i know are used on police v70s, other people put them on for better braking.
the 55mm torx for splitting the caliper, 18mm socket for the two 18mm bolts which hold everything to the hub, the g-clamp is used to press the brake back into place as you cannot do it by hand, but you must remember to open the brake fluid resvoir

I see, Thank you again.
I'll probably get fobbed off at the garage again anyway as I can't prove whether the springs were on before I took it in.

You would have thought that if they knew what they were doing they would have mentioned if the springs were missing before returning the vehicle to me.

If you mean the two large carrier bolts, I'd leave them alone.
Volvo don't give a reason for the torx instruction but Vida does specifically say it.
Maybe over time, they could weaken if undone multiple times? I don't know.

Fair enough if you're doing disc replacement. I was talking pad only.
