Default V50 cant figure out the problem

so, its had a new turbo and actuator, new sensor for the boost pressure but it still keeps coming up with engine service required.

just gone back to garage and now they say the code is the EGR valve, signal too high.

so could this be what been casueing the problem all along? really gtting fed up going to the garge continuously withk this car.

so 1 is it an idea to have the thing cleaned or is just better to repace, been quoted 711 to replace and thats probably without vat.

thoughts?

It may not necessarily need a new EGR valve. The existing one could be cleaned, if its not too far gone that is.

That won't cost £711.

A new EGR mode certainly does not cost £711 to replace. I replaced mine myself. A new one from Edinburgh Volvo cost about £250 IIRC (for our 1.6D) and you have to return the old one to them as it's an exchange part.

So basically, if they are quoting £711 then, considering it's a 30min job max, they are stiffing you for £400+ more than they should be. There are videos on youtube about replacing yourself but if you don't want to, go to a decent independent garage and get the job done by them.

Use a genuine Volvo EGR valve. I tried a Haas one and it didn't play nicely and I ended up paying again for a genuine Volvo one to fix the issue. You will either need to find a garage with VIDA or a friendly forum member with it to re-calibrate the new EGR valve once fitted.

I also had tried to clean my own EGR valve but to no avail. The signal errors and EGR stuck errors persisted. Hope that helps.

If the car doesn't have a dpf have you thought about blanking the egr? Even just to rule it out

it should have dpf, though i did think about deleting the egr and i mentioned to garage (they do rica maps) if that could be done instead of replacing the egr but they said no, when i asked why they said oh the egr has to be working fully before you can delete it.

yeah even though its an intermittent issue and has only ever come up once. tbh the guy saying so did not sound confident when saying this. to me it sounded like he was bull****ting and making it up but i dont know enough to say that with any certainly. He def didnt sound confident though.

Hi, i had a similar problem myself with my V50 1.6 Drive I replaced the EGR myself and regretted it as i bought one online for approx £75. I still had the errors coming in so ended up taking to an independant garage with a very knowledgeable guy who diagnosed that the new EGR was a pile of c##p. He replaced this with a Pierburg EGR and as my car had done 165000 miles recommended a Terraclean. Had this done and the car drives so much better and i am getting good MPG again. New Pierburg EGR was £150.00 and Terraclean was approx £200 with labour

When I was in the Jaguar world the axiom was "don't buy cheap parts". I imagine it's the same for Volvo.
