Picture gives you the bits I’ve had to remove to reach the thermostat. They’re just stacked in the boot, but you get the idea. This definitely is the worst one I’ve ever attempted!

JeeeeeZzz !!! looks like you've removed most of the plastics from under the bonnet
For once I'm glad my D5 is a EURO 4

Yep, it’s the first time I’ve had to take the windscreen wipers off to change a thermostat!
All the plastics, the metal firewall closest to the engine, intake pipe work, EGR valve, lots of wiring are the main bits.

If it ever runs again I’ll be shocked 😂

I’ve found out that the Vida instructions are obviously written for an engine that’s on a workbench and not in a car.

The question that begs an answer is whether the working parts of the thermostat are better made than the run of the mill routine throw away units fitted in most cars. Is Volvo's thermostat armour plated and bullet proof?

You'd never imagine such a scenario Fingers crossed it all goes back together OK and works better than before.

My EURO 4 D5 thermostat was a 2008 part originally fitted to a 2009 car and just got replaced... although I'm not 100% sure when it actually stopped working

All back together and running fine, using a dongle in the OBD port the running temperature is between 89-91 Celsius, it was between 60-70. Hoping to see improvements in economy but won’t really know until lockdown is over as it’s not often called to do anything other than local runs at the minute.

Reckon the job took about 9 hours over a few days, although think I could knock 2-3 hours off that if I had to do it again.

It might be difficult to see much improvement in fuel economy with all this cold weather about as well.
Early spring should hopefully see you back into the mid to high 30's MPG.
All well that ends well

Default An alternative thermostat fix

So thanks to Reggit for the description and pics, what a job. Well done.

I pondered what to do since mine is defunct, and the 9 hours estimate / bits to remove .

I decided to leave the existing thermostat where it was and put in another that bypassed the rad until hot. I have a lathe and welding kit so turned up a new housing for a stat, which was £9 on eBay.

Its not the neatest piece of kit by a long long way.. I'deally I'd clean up the welds and paint it, cut off the excess tabs on the hose clips etc, but it works brilliantly and seems to sit in there quite well. The heater is now working and the car gets upto temp, so a result. When the stat is cold the coolant goes into the rad hose at the nearside bottom of the rad and back to the block.

I am keeping a close eye on the temperature as you would expect.

Interestingly at 4-5 degrees ambient temp on small A roads (45 mph ash ) with the heater full on the stat only just opens and very little hot coolant goes through the rad.

Not for everyone clearly but there is more than one way to ....

I have the same issue with my own D5. Not warming up, be interested to hear how reddit got on. Did the mod last? I have done the same thing before on older diesels i've owned where the stat is accessible.

You can buy inline kits on ebay so il probably fit one of those.
