Its all a combination of matters to reach strong mileages.

Firstly the car needs to be a decent one off the factory line, not something that got pushed through at 3:30pm on Friday afternoon.

Then, the car's mechanical and electrics need to be robust and not fragile.

The car needs an owner who can happily spend money on upkeep, do competent DIY and also use garages/mechanics where they know what they are doing.

Then the owner needs to be someone who doesn't just start a car up and rag it from cold. Nothing wrong with using an engine but, do so sensibly.

I'm not on par with that mileage but, as an example, for the last 10 years I have been doing 900-1,000 miles a week. Firstly in my Silver C70 T5 for 5 years, before making that my mums daily driver. Then in my second C70 T5 which is my daily. (These eliminated a 03' Jaguar XKR and 2001 BMW M5 and E36 328i from my stable). Typically in 1 year, the car was serviced at an independent 4 times. Annual gearbox oil changes. Around 150,000 miles see's a new radiator requirement and suspension overhauls. I tried a new 2010 E350 CDI and 2013 Astra GTC diesel on lease deals and went back to the old Volvo's!

My independent Volvo mentioned, a couple of years ago, when the Silver C70 hit around 240,000 miles and had a new VVT thing costing around £400 for the part plus labour, that, people would usually scrap a car at this point. My comment was, its cheaper to spend £400-600 on a car that doesn't use or leak oil between services, drives and feels better new cars, doesn't ever break down than, buy something else that cannot do the same.
