Hi traveller...is your engine injection 2.0ltr or carb?..I thought it was injection but the reply page says carb?...the causes for poor performance i have here are for injection models...one common fault that crops up on most symptons is the ecu..might be worth checking..hj.

MEMO TO FORUM ADMIN

Please change the forum headings to reflect the full range of engine variants.

This is not the first thread where we have had a fruitless exchange of ideas between some people who have assumed carb and others injection.
In any cases involving fuel, ignition, non starting, poor running etc it is absolutely vital to know which we are talking about, and should be so simple just to click on the appropriate heading.

Could it be engine temp sensor? (assuming your model has one? someone will confirm either way) .
I don't mean the temp guage one, some models have a separate temp sensor. If this 'dies' it will not send any info to the ecu. So ecu will assume things are all cold & will continue to pump in extra fuel (as in 'choke mode'). Result will be lumpy idle, black smoke, poor consumption etc etc.

Just a thought

Hi traveller,You really are having some bad issues are'nt you.
One problem that caused my car to backfire and run really rough was when the breather pipe from the oiltrap came off the oiltrap!it was running but only just.I popped it back on and it cured the fault instantly.Look carefully for any air leaks, inlet manifold, injector seals etc. Also if you had the head done recently please check that the main earth cables are good including any that attatch to the bulkhead from the head.poor earths can show an amazing variety of problems??
I also just got back from doing 582 miles trouble free holiday running here and there. And today it cut out on me and would only rev after a bit of coaxing via the throttle pedal, wouldn't tickover,Then I heard the all familiar sound of the main fuel pump sucking air sound under the nearside rear passenger footwell,I still had half a tank of fuel as well,It only normally does this when very near empty,I put £20 in the tank and all is well for now.
Don't give up someone will sort it sooner or later.
Regards Brian.
