Default Dual Mass Flywheel

Fella I know has bought himself a 2003 S60 Bi-Fuel which needs a bit of work, one problem is the clutch is slipping after a long drive, 2 - 3 hours, I susspect the rear crank seal has let go and there is oil on the clutch. He says he feels a bit of judder when taking off as well, the engine needs other work too, so the whole plant will be lifted out for repair, but I'm wondering do the DM flywheel's give much bother on the petrol engines? There's 190k on this engine.

Anyone any views on this? Personal experience? Seems its only the D5's have DMF issues?

Also, is there a solid conversion kit available?

Im in the same boat, not much info on the petrol ones and its a bit quiet on this section too!

From what i can work out its recommended to change it when you change a clutch but at £664 from volvo its a bit steep, best price i got was around 360 plus vat.

Mine is out at the mo and it moves and wobbles, apparently they do that anyway so im bunging it back it with a new clutch.
As for a solid conversion its a bit tricky because the clutch is designed to work with a dmf and probably wouldnt last long with a solid flywheel but you could upgrade the clucth to one from an 850r(this is what ive read)

Hope this helps, matt

Thanks Matt, was actually wondering if the 850 flywheel and clutch kit would go into it, and if the 850's were DMF's.

I'd be tempted to use the same DMF thats in it too, but at 190k, I'd hate to find it fault in a couple of months and have to do it all again.

I'm not really up on the DMF's, but I know there are solid conversion kits available for the likes of the new model Transits, where the clutch and flywheel and like the old style, where the clutch disc has the shock absorbion in it

Theres a test you can do on the DMF's to see if they are too worn. Don't know it myself just know there is. LUK make the Volvo DMF's so there is a cheaper source if you end up needing one. You're not going to tell until its all apart.

From what I know of them, there is no warning, they just let go. If I knew there was issues with them on the petrol S60's I wouldn't think twice about replacing it, but, if there wasn't any issues I would maybe chance my luck.
