Default 2004 S60 D5 Steering Rack

Hi All,

I have been having powering steering issues with my 2004 (registered on the 23rd of April 2004) S60 D5 which has been diagnosed as a steering rack failure by a local garage (Swindon, Wiltshire) but they are struggling to get a spare rack.

Unfortunately they did not take a note of the racks part number so it is tricky for myself to source what would be the correct one.

Any advice? Also, if worse came to the worse, any idea on where to sell - I can't stand the thought of scrapping her. She may not be in perfect condition but the wheels and tyres are in great condition, she is pretty tidy and has an MOT till the 29th of November 2022.

Many thanks,
Jed.

What are the steering issues you've been experiencing?

Get your existing rack refurbished. There are refurbishers who will do a same-day turnround. I was in your position, and it's 100% what I should have done, as it turned out.

Basically the power steering fluid leaks - a lot! And as a result after about 2 miles of topping it up that steering becomes very heavy. I was hoping it was a pipe to the rack but the garage just said it was the rack.

The seal(s) have gone. Either buy a replacement (good luck, there's more varieties than Heinz - ask me how I know) or get it refurbed and be sure it fits.

Yep, sourcing replacements are really tricky, expecially for a 2004 as its a crossover year with no distinct chassis number change over... at least 3 different types and no easy way of identifying them. Lots of discussion around SMI (?) vs ZF, push fit or screw fit pipes etc. After 3 incorrect replacement racks I had mine refurbished. Sent away on Monday, received back on the Wednesday, about £150 from memory. Only annoyance was it took up my mate's ramp for nearly 3 weeks with all the back and forth sourcing replacements.

My rack was leaking for about 20k miles, and had some very mild pulsing on fast sweeping turns such as motorway slip roads... My car has 180k miles and hopefully good for a long time yet.

So to summarise, have yours refurbished!!

once the seals go, can you get to them or is a a case of just replace / refurb the whole rack?

Hi Thassos, thank you for the reply and that would be great if you still have the details.

Many thanks, Jed.
