Handbrake weakness
Hello.
I've a problem with my handbrake and hope you might help me out. Despite new shoes and a tight adjusted wire (seven clicks), the brakes won't stop my 740 from rolling. I 've tried to 'clean' the shoes by pulling the handbrake short periods while driving. The wire runs easily in its hose and the mechanics inside the drum brake are carefully greased for smooth operations. The wires and couplings under the car are not stuck in any ways. But still the brakes are too weak, and I can't think of anything else that causes this. I would appreciate suggestions from more skilled mechanics. Regards Øyvind |

Did you adjust it up by adjusting the cable, or did you back the cable off all the way and then adjust it up on the adjusters in the drum?

I did only loose the cable, changed the shoes and then tightened the cable again. The adjustment between the seats, by the way, is at it's longest now. Here I'm sitting now I must admit I don't know how to adjust the cable in the drums, but it's maybe simple and and self explained? I'm looking into it tomorrow, hope it stops snowing /raining soon! And thanks for replying!

The shoes will be moving a long way, probably just touching on the very trailing edge. Slacken the cable well off. Take the drums back off and have a good Look. I don’t know what type are on yours, probably castle type, thin nut. (Goes between shoes at opposite side to cylinder). Maybe someone that’s done them can chip in here.
