Default Change rear springs V70 “alternatives”

Hey!

I would like to be able to change the rear springs of a V70 2007 without lowering the control arm or stressing the bushings by bending the entire assembly downwards. I have changed the rear springs before by lowering the control arm so that is not the goal for this thread.

I was wondering if anyone knows a aftermarket compression tool that works and fits in this occasion to change the springs without having to do any of the above. I know Volvo has a special tool for this but that is like 1000$ and more.

I’ve typed in several forums and asked several different companies and so far no one knows any other way.

Any ideas/experience?

what you need is internal spring compressors

I recall reading where someone used external ones carefully on the inside of the spring but I haven't done it myself. I can only imagine I took a long time and a lot of patience with a ring spanner or ratchet spanner

even then you may still need to disconnect something to make a bit of room

Sealey sell an internal spring compressor that works fine. It costs around £30.

See this thread for some tips on using it and a link to Amazon sales page.

Ah nice, I’ve read about some internal compressors but most of them covers a diameter of 150mm max, mine are 155, but since someone tried this one it should work then. Thanks for the link.

First one I’ve read that actually talks about that specific car using internal compressors

Additional question to this thread:

I’ve now found a suitable spring compression tool for the rear springs but now to the second question.

First time I changed my rear springs it didn’t feel like the spring fit in the rubber upper spring seat. Upon closer inspection I noticed the springs I’ve bought was 158mm I diameter and the original one was 155mm. I returned them and bought a pair in 155mm in diameter.

Now I want to change to reinforced springs in the rear and I notice that a lot of the springs that are from a good brand that according to the site should fit is 158mm in diameter. Which also explains that my first purchase wasn’t wrong, it was just that I bought reinforced instead of original.

Does 158mm actually fit? Do I just need to squeeze them in place or is there something else?

Those that are 155mm and reinforced can only be purchased from poor brands here in Sweden.
