Opie Oils opinion on M47 oil

I have been looking around for the best oil to stick in the new box. I have had a good read through many post on here and seen many an opinion. I even ventured a read through the posts of the overly excitable and opinionated chaps on TurboBricks (too much coffee being drunk over there I think), and found as many opinions as posts (ish). I am sure you all know the options, but I thought I would email Opie Oils as they have given me good info in the past for the TVR. Here is the email I got back from them;

Looking at our data, the original spec for the gearbox was a 10w-40 engine oil, or ATF Type F as an alternative (I assume in colder climates). You're better off using a proper gear oil than a 10w-40, and as a 75w-90 gear oil is roughly equal to a 10w-40 engine oil, I would go for one of those.

If you want to go for the best, the Millers CRX 75w-90 NT, Gulf Competition, Motul Gear 300, Red Line MT90 and Millers TRX are ideal. The Castrol Universal/Universal Plus/Syntrans Multivehicle, Motul Motylgear and ***hs Gear Syn are all decent alternatives.

Engine and gear oil viscosities are measured on different scales. That much I know. If a oil expert says they are equivilent I'd be inclined to believe them.

I wasn't tryiong to be contentious, I actually edited my post to say I was surprised that the gear and engine oils crossed over like that but my edit disappeared

I have two Russian trucks so trying to fathom out what the Russian GOST viscosities translate to in SAE or other Western standards is a bit of a mission for all the oils and greases

I have just had my m47 gear box rebuilt by Gearlink for £ 490 + VAT

My Volvo Independent, AL's Motors installed it for £150 + VAT ( I don't like VAT)

He used TQ Dexron 111

If he gets this wrong the guarantee is invalid. So he must of taken advise.

I have used Amsoil Synco in the past and found the first gear bulking absolved.

The Dexron is working well thou'

I got transmission oil for my M47 from my local Volvo dealer, using my chassis number as a reference.

The part number is 1161645, and the bottle says SAE 75W API GL-4 Volvo Std 97308. It says it's recommended for M45, M46, M47, and some other types. A 1 litre bottle was £13.80+vat, but two were required for a complete replacement. An independent garage replaced it for £30+vat.

I noticed no difference whatsoever, but as it was a precautionary replacement that's probably just as well.
