Default V60 diesel / electric hybrid engine noise

My daughter owns a 2016 V60 diesel / electric hybrid.

A problem has developed... Whenever the engine is running there is a loud noise coming from the passenger side of the engine, where there also happens to be some 'electric stuff'.

I haven't seen the car myself, I may be able to get time to go and look at it early next week, but I have heard (only by phone so not heard very well) some 'nasty' sounding noises like a whine / crunchy sound.

She says the loudness and pitch of the sound increase as engine rpms increase.

Is there a known problem with the engine or 'electrics' that might be causing this sound? Or if you were to speculate what would you think the noise might be? I have wondered about the alternator, water pump, belts, idler pulleys, etc. I don't know what could cause the sound if it's related to the hybrid electric system.

Thanks,

Simon

I *think* any mechanical bits related to the ev side are at the back of the car, so perhaps you're on the right lines already ?

The things im aware of failing are

Air conditioning compressor
Integrated Starter Generator (ISG)
Aux belt and tensioner

Thanks Ulrikas,

As said I haven't seen the car myself but from what I heard over the phone I'm thinking it's probably more likely to be the ISG than AC compressor or belt/tensioner.

I've had a quick search on forum to try to find similar noise issues with the engine running on Volvo hybrids but I haven't found anything yet.

When you say Passenger side of the engine, is it a LHD or RHD car?

It's a RHD car.

But I don't think she's very sure which side of the engine bay the sound is coming from.
