G/box: 70 Auto: Gearbox woes

I just bought a 2000 V70 T5 Auto and the car ran ok 100 miles from Warrington to Barrow but when back in town the gearbox hesitated between 2nd and 3rd a few times. Later the 'transmission service required' warning and the engine light came on.

After some research i today changed the B4 servo cover. The old 1 looked fine however. I dropped the oil from the gearbox sump twice refilling to get some fresh atf in there. The stuff that came out was quite dirty.
The service warning is still on and it drove ok from cold but as it heated up the gearbox changes got worse with the engine light flashing and the car juddering even while sat in park!

Im now lost for ideas???

I'm not a volvo owner but have been looking at buying a T5. and, if the gearbox oil is dirty its not good news, from thread on here.

just buy a manual one ! legend has it that the T5 auto box needs a full rebuild at around the 100k mark !

I guess with the lack of ideas the option is to find a decent second hand box.
A risky buy on fleabay may be called for.

My local garage says £240 to fit + oil which seems fair enough

Cost involved in doing that? 1 million pounds?

Must be an urban legend.

There's nothing inherently fragile about the auto boxes Volvo use.

Just two things to bear in mind, there:-

1) The boxes should be maintained, and should have regular ATF changes
2) T5s (especially when modified) tend toward the upper end of the ideal upper torque desirable for the box, so it makes sense to ensure that if you have an auto and a T5 - especially if modified - then you should look after it well.

My S70 (albeit not a T5) has over 250k miles on the original autobox (AW50-42LE).

I agree.

Volvo automatics are just as reliable as any going around.

One problem with a forum like this is you only find out what goes wrong with Volvos. If I had read any Volvo forums prior to buying a Volvo I probably wouldn't have bought one (the first one I bought has been that good, guess what, there is a second one keeping it company in the right garage now).

However, there are countless thousands of Volvo owners motoring around quite happily who never find the need to get on a forum like this and tell everyone what a great car they have.

So, even though we do experience faults from time to time with our Volvos, just remember they are a well built and have earned a well deserved reputation for both longevity and reliability.

theres not many ten year old cars that are still going as strong as volvo`s are with 250k on the clock!...

ten yr old fords,vauxhalls,fiat,alfa`s and the rest have all died a death with 200k max.

My auto box box on C70 T5 had original fluid in until 131,000miles when I had it changed. Always drive the car fast (upto 155mph) on motorways for prolonged periods and like the shove from the torque elsewhere. My g/box is 100% and no signs of slight slipping or jerky changes.......

Theres a 32 year old Mercedes Benz 230 near me with over 750,000 on thats automatic and still going very strong
