The chirping noise turned out to be the freewheel pulley on the alternator. My local Volvo garage changed it, labour £29.50, parts £60.00 (+VAT).

Hei.

Me to had the exactly same problem as Vilda Hilda. Unfortunately I spent some money on the belt pensioner, with no result, before I did a search in this forum.
Changing the alternator pulley clutch solved my problem.

I actually changed the whole alternator. Found it to be better value for money since my 2002 D5 has nearly 200 000km on the clock. The change of the pulley clutch only, would have cost me £200 (parts + service) I therefore spent £400 and did the job myself. (it is not a joke, it is norwegian price :-)

Smile Long live the forum !!

I too experienced an intermittent rumble at idle which got worse over a period of weeks (2004 D5 V70). I noticed the aux drive belt wasn't running as smoothly as it should on the run from the PAS pump to the air con pump and so I thought it must be the belt tensioner.

Thank goodness for these forums - after stumbling upon this thread I removed the alternator and took it to the local auto electrics guy who confirmed that the clutch pulley had seized. He then sourced and fitted a new clutch pulley and I had the unit returned the same day - total cost £70.

After reassembly everything is now running as it should -
Long live the forum!!!

When peole say the clutch pulley on the alternator... This leaves me confused..

Im aware the aircon has a magnetic clutch - but the small metal pulley on the alternator appears as a regular metal pulley wheel - never heard of an alternator on a car having an on/off clutch assembly??

Default Aux belt tension

How do you release the aux belt to remove it?

I took the belt off.

My idler has dry noisey bearing.
My Aircon compressor has noisey bearing also. It is Zenex/Valeo Vane style.

Can I replace the bearing by taking the hub/pully off - leavintg the compressor in situ.

Wheres the best place for a bearing in UK please.

Default Aircon pulley removal

Hi, Ive stripped my steering pump, alternator, and have my aircon compressor tied up on angle.

I got the 10mm bolt out - I found 3 bolts that fit the hub plate and made a puller - but it didnt work. nuked a few turns of thread in the shaft end - I will have to use a longer bolt as there are still 6 good turns further in.

How does one get the f - ing' hub off - some vids show these almost leap off.

I guess these are different type which are pressed on with intersellar force

Im getting that 1/2 grand bill feeling - not bad for recently redundant, again.

Today has been one of those

Sealey do a pulley removal kit for about £12. The pulleys can be on damn tight, the thing needs to be in a vice.
