Leak detection fluid that gas engineers use is good stuff, it creates a foam that persists for a few minutes to highlight a leak, might be worth a go? Comes in a spray can from your local plumbers merchant.

Not sure exactly what you mean (sorry for being thick). Do you mean check each hose individually like looking for a puncture on an inner tube, or pressurise the whole system?

Wouldn't know where to start pressurising the whole system by hand (like I said I'm just learning an engine this complex). Are you aware of any how-to videos?

Moot point at the moment as I'm out of time, but it's good to know for next time.

Cheers

Disconnect the rubberhoses connected to the intercooler from the piping.
Put a can in one end and screw the clamp back on.
Buy a cheap drinkflask with a detachable lid with a niple . Put that lid in the other hose of the intercooler and tighten the original clamp back on
disconnect the niple from a bicycle pump and put that hose over the niple of drinkflask lid and screw tight with a clamp.
Start pumping and see if the pressure remains and listen for leaks.
If Leaking : replace intercooler .No leaks? Good! Try next component until you have found it
Piping from the turbo till intercooler can be done the same way.

Thanks 5cilinder, got what you mean now.

Got a call from the garage yesterday after they kindly picked up the car from my house (saved me a load of hassle as I work in London).

Turns out it is the intercooler leaking. He may have even said it was cracked (I don't recall correctly). If it was not sure how that would happen. Anyway £140 for an after market one, but went with a genuine Volvo one for £170. I've also asked them to replace the ABS rings which is the job I should have been doing rather than trying to sort this out, and also clean out the EGR valve and pipe.

The total cost will probably sting a bit, but I should get a nice healthy car back that moves when I press the one on the right rather than a flat refusal before offering a slow crawl to 40mph

Well it's fixed.

New intercooler fitted, EGR valve cleaned out, plus both front ABS rings replaced........ £598.02

Ouch, but I was out of time so had to do it. At least I got a free valet

Worth checking the boost levels as Cheshired5 posted earlier, the intercooler can split if there's water sitting in the bottom on a frosty night, most other causes are overboost related.

Hi 5cilinder, Would you elaborate on this bicycle pump method please?

Disconnect the rubberhoses connected to the intercooler from the piping.
Put a can in one end and screw the clamp back on. - What sort of can, Coke?
Buy a cheap drinkflask with a detachable lid with a niple. - Where would I get a drinks flask like this in the UK? Put that lid in the other hose of the intercooler and tighten the original clamp back on
disconnect the niple from a bicycle pump and put that hose over the niple of drinkflask lid and screw tight with a clamp. - What does the nipple look like?
Start pumping and see if the pressure remains and listen for leaks.
If Leaking : replace intercooler .No leaks? Good! Try next component until you have found it
Piping from the turbo till intercooler can be done the same way.

Thanks

Just measure the diameter of the hoses....and measure objects that are slightly smaller, plug it in and clamp it.
I dont live in the UK so i dont know what or where to buy things.... but i had a hard plastic reusable flask with a detached top with a suction niple that i connected a hose on and connected to a bicycle pump.
Be creative
