D4 (D420T5) crankcase pressure ventilation
Hello Volvo owners,
I own a V60 Diesel with D4 engine and suffer from high oil consumption. There have been no oil leaks detected, however, at the valve cover oil fill opening I detected a crankcase overpressure. The overpressure is gentle but spoils oil when oil cap is removed. The dealer told me that this engine type doesn't have a bolt on oil trap or PCV valve for crankcase ventilation. The vent system might be included inside the valve cover Can somebody explain how the crankcase ventilation works on this engine type and give some advise what to check. Many thanks, and best regards from Germany, Waldemar Car registration: March 2013 |

Your problem isnt the crankcase ventilation, its a symptom of coked up piston rings which creates excessive blowby, hence the oil consumption.
These engines where designed to save the polar bears with low tension piston rings to save 0,1 grams of co2 and too small drain holes in the oil scrape rings which get clogged with burned oil . There are even engines today that have cam belts that run in the sump oil and dissolve over time. i guess that a blown engine saves even more co2 if it cant run anymore Last edited by 5cilinder; Jan 25th, 2022 at 01:23. |
