Default Manual gearbox oil

the owner's manual says to use Volvo synthetic gearbox oil 97308.

Does anyone know what the modern equivalent of that, that I can get from my local motor factors?

I think its this, on the basis my car has the M56 gearbox: https://www.partsmonster.co.uk/genui...7--11517-p.asp

But does anyone know what spec of oil this actually is?

That partsmonster link shows the new Volvo part number 31280771

which can you then find on Skandix
https://www.skandix.de/en/spare-part...l-75w/1030712/
which reveals the oil spec.

further on this, I understand it's advisable to change the plug washers.

Anyone know the size of the washer, for the gearbox? I assume it's not the same as that on the engine oil sump as the size of the plug for the gearbox is bigger (24mm)

They are pennies from Volvo.

thanks. Will they be standard size to fit a 24mm plug? I'd rather buy them off the internet if I can as my nearest Volvo dealer is a bit of a distance.

I've just got some further questions about the gearbox oil change I need to do.

1. How important is it to use Volvo branded oil? It's nearly £30 for a litre! The equivalent from Morris is £11 a litre, and it looks to be the same spec, GL4 fully synthetic, here: https://www.morrislubricants.co.uk/p...-mtfe-75w.html Does this look ok to use? Not sure I fancy paying £60+ on Volvo oil

2. I think the capacity is 2.1ltr, is that right? But I have read that it should be ok to use 2 x 1ltr bottles on the basis not all of the oil will drain out. Otherwise it means buying a third bottle for the extra 0.1ltr.

3. Think the fill and drain plugs are both 24mm, is that right?

cheers all.

I don't know where you got that price from for the oil. The oil comes in a 4lt container and I paid £60 for 4 litres last year. The gearbox will need about 2 litres as not all the old oil will drain out. Both plugs are the same size.

I did it recently on the M66 gearbox and had a small amount left over from 2 x 1L bottles. Didn't know you could get 4L, but you won't need it.

Think I paid £22 per bottle from FRF. I was buying other parts too, so the delivery charge didn't break the deal.

Personally, I'd buy the Volvo stuff.
