Or did I just imagine that because the heater seems to deliver hot air very quickly once the car is started.
Most modern diesels, and I know my 2007 S80 does (I believe it's standard fitment) have a PTC (positive temperature coeffficient) electric heater built in that's controlled by the ECU. I believe it only engages below a certain temperature and it has a fuse for 100A so can really put a drain on the system.

My 2001 VW Caravelle has an Eberspacher diesel heater as standard fitment as that has heating for the back as well, but that only engages below 5c and isn't plugged in on mine (previous owner, I'm planning to find out why it's disconnected)

None of my vehicles have heated front screens and I have had no problems driving 365 days a year.

Paul.
The heated windscreen is the one feature that makes my Focus Titanium better than my V70. It's really good.

Yes you are right , all new volvo models have had a powerful electric heating element in the heater casing since 2004 , you get warm air within a minute certainly quicker than the electric screen takes to start working , The electric screen is a marketing tool to keep up with other makes of car offering one .. .. They have never been necessary in volvos ( Except the 300 series ! ) and that includes the 140 series which won an award from MOTOR magazine as having the best and quickest warming heater of any car they tested .( 35 C was recorded ) !
