State of Charge SoC
In Volvo cars with BMS the app "Car Scanner ELM OBD2" displays many parameters related to voltage and current: battery state of charge (% SoC), charging current, alternator current, ECU voltage, etc. BMS keeps the battery at cca. 85% SoC.

Not sure if this is relevant but: I lived with the 'low battery charge' notice coming on every now and then just before I started the car. It began to happen more frequently but the car never refused to start. At various times I checked battery voltage with battery disconnected and found it to be 12.4v +/- 0.1.
The message annoyed me so in the end I bought a new battery, just to see if it cured it. Just over a month later and I can report that it has ... no message since fitting the new battery. The car is an XC70 almost 5 years old. I bought the battery from my local Volvo dealer... and it was cheaper than a battery from a car parts outlet. Cheers, Phil |
