S40 2.0D Throttle Body Cleaning Guide

Morning All!

Right well after reading many posts on here and struggling to find a picture guide I thought I would lend a hand to anyone else who may want to DIY clean the throttle body rather than pay Volvo £50ish to clean it for you.

Disclaimer: This is a guide of how I did the throttle body clean and therefore take no responsibility if you undertake this work yourself.

Right so here is the engine with throttle body attached.

Here is the throttle body with everything still attached.

Remove the white data lead/cable on the left.

Then remove the Green data lead/cable on right.

Remove the black tube connected to the side of the plastic throttle body.

Here you can see two of the torx bolt holes. (I have removed the bolts so you can see better) There is an additional bolt underneath the throttle body.

Success! Throttle body removed.

The state of inside my throttle body when removed.

The other side. Yuck!

Right out came the carb cleaner and an old toothbrush. :-) Oh and an old rag/cloth. Then hey presto, all nice and clean again.

Nice guide, was gonna do one a while ago but haven't got the correct size torx bit (can u tell me size please)? do you need to renew gasket/seal and has it made much of a difference in the cars running?

I would say yes but I might be imagining it. Only being honest. But it does seem smoother and starts nicely everytime. :-)

you forgot to tell us about chamfering the edges of the disc flap both sides top and bottom,this an actuall technical repair from volvo uk..

other than that good pics

Managed to do mine this afternoon after finding the correct torx bit in my toolbox. Was in the same state as yours craigblues but managed to get it as clean, didn't file the flap either as copperknob advises as it seemed ok and moved freely. I also scrapped out the crud from the manifold as that was quite bad too. while i was at it, i fitted a blanking plate to the egr valve as that arrived yesterday via fleabay! Haven't taken it for a spin yet but it definitely idled better and smoother then before as it was a bit lumpy when cold.

Question - what advantages are there to this procedure.
Better acceleration ? Improved MPG?Preventing a known issue?

Tempted to give it a go but need to understand what the advantages are before committing

which Torx bit size was it? Need to see if I have the right one in my toolbox :-$

Sorry to sound so naive copperknob but what do you mean by the above statement?

Been trying to find reference to it on the forums but no luck.

Literally is what it is taking the edges from the flap of the throttle body to help resolve the starting issues.
