Got worried for a moment then Bob - i thought you genuinely did have a clean and tidy workbench (sign of a sick mind!) until i saw the photos then all was forgiven!

I do like your vice bob. Somewhat magnificent. Is it your only vice?

My work vice is a Record bought in about 1973 from a small hardware ironmongers in Ascot. Not known for low prices and I was a young trainee pathology scientist, but it was old stock at the old price. Cushti. It has served well. Mounted on a lump of solid timber. It serves underneath cars, inside cars, at the roadside, on top of wheelie bins, clamped in the jaws of one of my kept outdoor boot sale workmates...it serves me faithfully and true. That workmate is currently sequestered from me as a potting bench and harvested seed maturing station. But I have another even more decrepid one. opps. That is a bird table.

Dave. I am very trying to be right.

£3-19/6 by any chance?

I used to have a B&D Hedge Trimmer accessory for use with the contemporary (of the time then) power drill and i think i may still have the box for it with a price tag of £4 - 10/-. It had never been used when i got it, i only used it once to prove it worked.

There's a lot to be said for the old tools, they were built to last! Unlike that cheap, cr@ppy vice i bought!

Gosh no I couldn't afford that much!

I still have and sometimes use a Wolf electric drill that Dad I remember bought in the 1950s. And I have the speed reducing gear that clamped on the front for masonry drilling. But my favourite is a screwdriver. Grandad made it just after the second worl war, made it from a piece of aircraft strut left behind as dumped rubbish on an airfield they vacated near Warrington. The swing in grandad's shed doorway was made from parachute harness with a plank seat.

I remember in about 1973 (just after we joined the "Common Market" now EU) that my brother and dad were moaning about the cost of petrol - "Six bob for a gallon of petrol! Ridiculous!" as petrol had just gone up from 27 New Pence to 30 New Pence a gallon.

Putting my Hedge Trimmer attachment in perspective (which was circa 1967/68) that was 90.5 shillings so 15+ times the cost of a gallon of petrol. Keeping the figures simple and calling it £6 a gallon now, that was about £90-100 for that hedge trimmer in todays terms.

Obviously a very simplistic conversion but gives an idea - i also remember my brther bought my dad the electric drill that would have powered the hedge trimmer as a birthday present in 1973 as he was working for John Lewis and got staff discount but it was still £30 or 100 times the cost of a gallon of petrol!

When I dispensed petrol, "best" was 4/11d.

Given a few more years price will be mega sky high. Petrol filling places will become hard to find. All cars will have a super efficient solar panel on the roof to charge their batteries. If the sun shines.

How far off topic is this now?

.

Ah, but when was that? Not sure it is off-topic, we were discussing old tools (vices) and i used a couple of other old tools as an example in my suggestion old tools were better made. As i had the price marked on the hedge trimmer and knew how much my brother paid for the power drill he bought my dad, i just used petrol as an every day commodity to "translate" the price into modern day terms.

As for solar powered cars, we'd be fine at the moment! Absolutely banjaxed in the middle of winter though! The words "over my cold, dead, lifeless body" also come to mind!

It seems you two are easily distracted. but amusing. I do have other vices Stephen. Here's but just a glimpse of my smallest. The others are between me and my maker!

Getting partially back to topic I have ordered one of those green TPU jobbies for £7.90 (that's £7-18-00 to you guys!). Thanks for the pointer. With the wind behind it it should arrive before the end of the week.

Bob.
