My T5 is averaging 36.5 which I think is quite good for a big petrol engined turbo. That's after a long run through Europe usually cruising at about 90 - 100mph most of the way and town driving included.

It would be my guess that for higher speeds (90mph+), a bigger engined petrol is more economical.

any bigger engine will be more economical less revs being pulled less fuel...i mean sure a D5 would be not far behind doing 90 at better MPG.

But tbh it is pretty pointless majority of drivers in the UK rarely get the chance to pull 80 now there is just no point you might as well take your time get past what you can and not end up a in queue any faster.
