Angry Changed engine and auto box won’t work

The cam belt snapped on my D5 S60 auto 2004 looks like water pump seized and stripped the belt, sourced new engine and garage put it in for me, engine started first time but when they tried to move it the auto box wouldn’t work! Any ideas?
The box moves from park to neutral but nothing from drive or reverse, garage said the pump in the gear box has gone . Any ideas?

I was going to say that I think the box needs programming to the car but then remembered you changed the engine and not the box. Not sure if it could be some sort of programming issue though? Otherwise I assume the gearbox was damaged somehow upon engine breaking?

Did the 'box function correctly prior to the engine failure, 'CADpaul?'

How many miles has it covered, and had the ATF been changed at all?

Regards, John.

The box worked great before the cam belt snapped
Car has done 139k
I’ve paid for the second hand engine and it’s fitting and I don’t understand why the box has stopped working, the fluid wasn’t changed before.

I must go with the safe answer of suggesting that you have the car read by an experienced shop with a VIDA (Volvo's diagnostic system).

There's a foot long pipe one could leave out of my Powerglide which left it inert....but that was a '64 Chevy. Did they leave something out?

You must fully seat the torque converter in my Ranger or you will break the pump tightening the engine and trans together.....but that's a 2005 US Ford.
Do such questions of alignment apply here?

Do they know the transmission? There's a big bolt head atop the AW-55 series transmissions which people think is a fill hole. Removing it (innocently) renders the unit inoperable. You have to tear the unit apart to reattach things. Could this have been done?

Was the shift cable reattached to the PNP switch?

Was the installation done very recently? Has the garage had enough time to look for an overlooked unplugged connecter?

It wasnt a Volvo specialist just my local garage, they took the engine and box out again to check it was ‘right’ just seems strange, car is back home on my drive and my wallet is very empty

I'm inclined to agree with 'Willber' and 'G&K' regarding a disconnect between the engine and 'box, 'CADpaul'. In my experience of driving automatic Volvos for nearly 40 years, I have never known a 'box to fail catastrophically; an auto usually either slips or drags when it is failing, not fail completely.

Your mileage is modest and if the ATF was maintained in good order your 'box should be good for twice that distance. It must be incredibly frustrating to have changed the motor only to find that the car will not drive. I hope that you are able to successfully resolve the issue without incurring significant additional expenditure.

Regards, John.

Yep sounds like the only thing that would destroy the pump, now how to I tell the garage that did the work?
